Why Did Hermione Not Help Dobby When His Life Was In Danger?

Why didn’t Hermione save Dobby? Why did she stand unmoved when Harry begged him to help him save Dobby?

Dobby, the big-hearted elf, made his first appearance in the Chamber of Secrets when he desperately tried to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts, hoping to save his life. From then till his death (and even after), there was never a moment we stopped loving Dobby. Unfortunately, however, Dobby eventually became another casualty suffered in the wizarding war, sacrificing himself to protect Harry and his friends to help them escape from Malfoy Manor. Dobby’s death was a hit in the gut for Harry Potter fans and was one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the wizard franchise. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, after Dobby saved Harry and his companions, Bellatrix threw a dagger at Dobby, which struck him in the heart. In its aftermath, we saw Harry begging Hermione to give him anything to save Dobby, but she stood still. It felt weird because Hermione had saved the day numerous times with her intellect, studiousness, and quick thinking. So why was she unable to save Dobby? Was it too late to do anything? Or was there any other reason?

Why Didn’t Hermione Help Dobby?

Here are some reasons why Hermione could not help Harry in saving Dobby.

  • Hermione was not a trained healer: Although she had a general knowledge of various spells, Hermione was not trained for healing. Even in the books, she mentioned that her lack of medical knowledge is astounding considering the number of dangerous spots they found themselves in over the years. She thought about a lot of things but she never attempted to further her knowledge of healing wounds. Hermione knew how to use healing potions, but she was not Madam Pomfrey. It was also why she was unable to save Snape in The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Dobby’s injuries were too severe to be healed. Bellatrix threw the knife at Harry, but it struck Dobby, piercing right through his heart. The dagger Bellatrix used was a cursed one, and healing a wound caused by a cursed dagger required immense medical skills, something which Hermione lacked.

  • Hermione was still in shock: Another thing to consider is Hermione’s state of mind when Dobby got injured. All of them had just escaped imprisonment and certain death. She was still in shock and could not think very clearly as she had been tortured by Bellatrix at the Malfoy Manor some time ago. When she needed help herself, she could have possibly not healed Dobby even if she knew how to do so.

  • Dobby was an elf: Hermione was aware that elf magic was different from wizard magic. Elves could disapparate in and out of Hogwarts while wizards could not. While Hermione had a general knowledge of various spells, she did not have the expertise in specific healing spells to heal a death wound on a house elf. Their physiology was very different from wizards. It was why Kreacher could survive the potion that drove Dumbledore insane. So even if Hermione tried and used one of her magic spells, she could not have saved Dobby.

  • Most importantly, Hermione was not present when Dobby died. As soon as they landed on the beach, Ron took her inside the cottage. When Harry realized that Dobby was wounded, Hermione was still inside the house, in shock, unable to respond to anything at the moment.

Why Did Hermione Not Use Her Dittany On Dobby When He Was Dying?

It is a significant question considering that Hermione used Dittany to heal Ron. So why couldn’t she do so when Dobby was dying?

The bottle carrying the essence of Dittany that Hermione used to heal Ron was in Hermione’s beaded bag that she left behind in the forest when they were captured by Snatchers and taken to the Malfoy Manor. So Hermione didn’t have anything to save Dobby.

Even if Hermione had the Dittany essence, she would not have been able to save Dobby. With the Dittany, even Ron’s healing was slow. It also did not seem to help with blood loss, as per the comment about Ron’s pallor. From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

“Harry and Hermione half carried, half dragged Ron through the entrance of the tent… Even this short journey had turned Ron whiter still, and once they had settled him on the mattress he closed his eyes again and did not speak for a while.”

Dobby was more gravely injured, and he was likely suffering from internal bleeding and severe blood loss. Dittany appeared to be good for helping to heal wounds, not fix internal injuries that required immediate surgery. Healing his skin would have been pointless given that he had been stabbed. Moreover, as aforementioned, Hermione was not an experienced healer. She lacked the skills to do advanced magical healing, as was required in Dobby’s case. Also, Dittany did not replenish blood. Hermione likely knew that this situation exceeded anything she was capable of fixing.
