How Did Kakashi Lose His Sharingan After Obito’s Death?

Kakashi was one of the most significant characters in the Narutoverse. He was once the student of Minato, the Fourth Hokage, and became Jonin at a very young age. During the Third Great Ninja War, he led team Minato to Kannabi Bridge, which he had to destroy to abort Iwagakure’s plans. Kakashi and his Sharingan are among the anime’s most discussed topics. Many fans still wonder why Kakashi lost his Sharingan after the death of Obito. Well, this article is there to make it a lot easier for you.

How Did Kakashi Lose Both His Sharingan?

Before answering the obvious, let me briefly walk you through the backstory of Kakashi’s Sharingan.

How Did Kakashi Get His Sharingan?

Obito gave his Sharingan to Kakashi when Obito was critically injured after a boulder fell on him in the cave, where they went to rescue the kidnapped Rin. Obito gave his Sharingan as a parting gift to Kakashi before he “died” and Rin implanted the Sharingan into Kakashi’s freshly impaired eye socket.

Kakashi was a part of Minato’s team, the other teammates being Rin Nohora and Obito Uchiha. The group formed during the Third Great Ninja War, which included the Konohagakure (the Hidden Leaf Village) and Iwagakure (the Hidden Stone Villages). It was during those days when Kakashi was promoted to Jonin.

Moving forward, they were tasked with a mission. Kakashi was left in charge while Minato had to do something else. On their mission, Rin was abducted by Hidden Stone Shinobi. A skirmish occurred between Kakashi and Obito, where Kakashi vowed to stick to the mission while Obito wanted to save Rin. This skirmish resulted in the two going their separate paths. Kakashi then, realizing the error of his ways, decided to come and help out Obito. Kakashi came to find Obito and on finding him brawling with the kidnappers, decided to help. During the altercation, Kakashi lost his eye and fought one-eyed.

One of the kidnappers decided to make the cave collapse. Instead of running away, Obito decided to push Kakashi out of the cave and save his life. Half of Obito’s body was crushed by a boulder, rendering him in a critical state and almost dead. Obito realized that he would not make it and decided to have his Sharingan as a gift to Kakashi, thus filling in the gap left by his missing eye.

How Did Kakashi Lose His Sharingan?

Kakashi lost his Sharingan in The Fourth Ninja War when Madara ripped Kakashi’s Sharingan and transplanted it as his left eye to transport himself to Obito’s Second Dimension. Naruto, using the Hagaromo’s power, created a normal eye for Kakashi.

But this was not the end as Kakashi temporarily regained both Sharingan of Obito, which helped him gain access to new features like perfect Susanoo. He used them to fight against Kaguya with Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.

How Did Kakashi Regain His Sharingan After Madara Snatched It?

During the Kaguya attack, prepared to give his life to lend what little assistance he could, Kakashi stood in front of Sasuke to take the attack while Obito did the same for Naruto. They were unified in their willingness to die but Obito decided that it was too soon for Kakashi. So he used Kamui on the attack bound for him, leaving Obito unable to save himself.

In chapter 686, after Obito sacrificed himself to save both Naruto and Sasuke, his body died, but his spirit was still alive and it inhabited Kakashi, leading him to gain two Mangekyo Sharingan.

By getting the two Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi could use many abilities such as Susanoo and a better version of Kamui, allowing him to pass through objects and manipulate their shape to become shuriken.

But eventually, Kakashi’s Sharingan faded forever.

Why Did Kakashi’s Sharingan Fade After Obito Died?

After the battle ended, Obito’s Sharingan disappeared from Kakashi. Why did it happen when the Sharingans that Danzo had stolen from Shisui and the one Shisui had given Itachi were still okay even after its original owner had died?

Bestowing Kakashi with two Mangekyō Sharingan was the doing of the spirit of Obito and not the physical self. So when Kaguya was defeated, Obito’s spirit left Kakashi’s side to join the other world, taking his Sharingan along with him.

Both Kakashi and Danzo had physically obtained their Sharingan via transplantation. During the finale of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Madara ripped his Sharingan eye out and transplanted it as his left eye. So Kakashi’s physically transplanted Sharingan was taken away. Later, the two Mangekyo Sharingan he received from Obito were spiritually influenced and not physically present. After Kaguya’s incapacitation, as Obito’s spirit dispersed, so did the Sharingan.

If the Sharingan had been physically present, it would have stayed just like Danzo and pre-war Kakashi. It was because Sharingan that have been transplanted into someone will never fade, even if the original user died, as was the case with Danzo and Shisui. The original Sharingan that Kakashi had received would not have faded either had Madara not snatched it.

Does Kakashi Have His Sharingan in Boruto?

No, Kakashi does not have his two Sharingan in Boruto. The two Mangekyo Sharingan Obito bestowed on him faded when Obito’s spirit left his body for the other side of the world after Kaguya’s defeat. However, Kakashi does have both his eyes.

Moreover, for Kakashi, having two Sharingan would also be a bad idea as we already saw how having even one Sharingan was a massive drain on his chakra. If he had them, he would probably have been too drained of chakra as he could not turn them off at will. Perhaps, he could have only been able to fight in specific situations, which would have placed Kakashi at a serious disadvantage.
