Wondering about the faces on Grandmaster’s Tower in Thor: Ragnarok? You are at the right place because this article is going to clarify your doubts about the same. Besides this, I’ll be talking about the Grandmaster and other related things that might interest you.
Thor: Ragnarok is one of Marvel’s funniest films, and the Grandmaster’s character has a great role to play here. So before diving into our main topic for today’s discussion, let me first brief you about the Grandmaster.
Who Is Grandmaster In Thor: Ragnarok?
“My name is Grandmaster. I preside over a little harlequinade called the Contest of Champions. People come from far and wide to unwillingly participate in it, and you, my friend, might just be part of the new cast!” ―Grandmaster
En Dwi Gast, who goes by the name Grandmaster, is the ruler of Sakaar, an artificial trash planet. He has a fascination with gaming and is the father of the Contest of Champions, a gladiatorial event held in the arena. He is a ruthless tyrant and the only reason why the people of Sakaar love him is the Contest of Champions. His bodyguards are Topaz and Scrapper 142 (played by Tessa Thompson), a Valkyrie whom he took under his wing after the massacre of the Valkyrie by Hela.
The Grandmaster of the comics is a powerful cosmic entity having powers as one of the Elders of the Universe. But he never demonstrates that kind of power and is outsmarted by Thanos. Besides this, he is shown as a manipulator and the master of games and challenges. The MCU version of the Grandmaster is an eccentric old man having the physiology of a regular human and is the master of games like in the comics. He has a melt stick that can melt any organic metal upon touching it, making it a potentially dangerous weapon against anyone who crosses his path.
How Powerful Is The Grandmaster?
The Grandmaster is billions of years old and has the powers like those of the Elders. But it is not what makes him so powerful. The real deal is his gadget, the melt stick. In Ragnarok, we see Thor being scared of Grandmaster’s melt stick. Mind you, he is the God of Thunder, the very guy who went against Hela, Thanos, Malekith, Ultron, and umpteen number of villains in his lifetime, but in Sakaar, he was brought down to his knees. Now let us talk about the green menace, the one who punched a Leviathan, who attacked Surtur, but in Sakaar, he was content to be the Grandmaster’s bit, a champion. All this is just because of one gadget. And who created such a powerful gadget? The Grandmaster!
The Faces On Grandmaster’s Tower In Thor: Ragnarok
The Grandmaster hosts gladiatorial fights in Sakaar, and whoever wins the contest becomes the Champion. To honor the Champions i.e., the winning contenders, he put up their faces (made of metal) on his living tower. So, the Grandmaster’s tower has the faces of all the Champions up until the fight between Thor and Hulk in Ragnarok.
The Champions whose faces were displayed on Grandmaster’s Tower were the Hulk, Beta Ray Bill, Man-Thing, Bi-Beast, Dark Crawler, and Ares. They were previous challengers and Champions before the Hulk became the new champion. Though we do not know where they are, here are some details about them (except for The Hulk as you probably know all about our green man!)
Beta Ray Bill
Beta Ray Bill is a Korbinite having no home planet because Surtur destroyed his planet as he did with Asgard. Beta Ray Bill has superhuman strength, speed, durability, and he is superior in hand-to-hand combat. His combat prowess is such that he was able to beat Thor, noted as one of the best hand-to-hand fighters in the Marvel Universe, to a standstill. He is also the original wielder of Stormbreaker, which Odin gifted him after he defeated Thor in combat.
Ares is the Greek God of War. Until 2006, he was depicted as a villain in the Marvel Universe and he opposed Thor, Hercules, and Avengers. He has faced Hulk in battle on a few occasions, with Hulk always getting the better of the encounter. In 2006, Ares was recast – he became an anti-hero and was no longer a villain.
Bi-Beast is a highly advanced android with two heads, and he was created by an avian race, that was a subspecies of Inhumans. The strength of Bi-Beast matches that of Hulk.
Dark Crawler is also known as Night-Crawler and was an ancient enemy of the Undying Ones. He can lift 100 tons of weight quite easily, and he is one of Marvel’s most powerful yet underrated characters.
Man-Thing is a huge and empathic swamp monster. He is a former scientist who was transformed into a creature composed of vegetable matter through the synergistic interaction of mystical energy and swamp mutagens. He is immortal and indestructible and his strength matches that of Hulk.
Where Are The Champions Now?
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nothing is shown as to where the Champions of Sakaar are. We do not know whether they were killed or not. It is unlikely that they were killed because that prevents them from being used in future Marvel movies if Marvel wants to bring them in. Perhaps, they fell out of favor with the people of Sakaar, likely by losing a fight, which resulted in them being allowed to leave. Or they could have simply escaped, as they are powerful enough to do so. (Except for Bi-Beast who is an android that doesn’t really have free will.)
So that is all folks about the Grandmaster and his renowned Champions Tower!
